The Livingstone Process

Livingstone Concrete Studio specializes in concrete elements created for just about every application.  One of the beautiful things about concrete is that it must be created.  Unlike other stones, because of its ability to be molded and customized, concrete is not just limited to countertops. From outdoor kitchens and fire pits, to mantles, furniture, bathrooms and bars, our fabrication offerings know no limits (that we know of, yet!)

Design & Planning

At Livingstone Concrete Studio, we’re all artists at heart. (And, we dig talking about concrete.) The truth of the matter is, the sooner we can get involved in the design process, the better. Ideally, we can begin designing with you before the construction has begun. This allows us to really explore options without limitations as opposed to working with what has been built. This will also allow us to work directly with your architect or builder to create the necessary budgetary and structural changes in the plan to accommodate whatever your vision may be. Casting & Fabrication

Once the concept has been approved, we do a complete analysis of the creative process,  and put together a fabrication itinerary. Livingstone will drive the process and any elements involved in the design that are not created in-house are communicated to our outside collaborators.  The concrete elements can be produced in a variety of ways.  Typically, projects can be built in our studio or built on-site, or a combination of both.  There are advantages and drawbacks to each.

Studio Casting

Pre-cast picture-min.jpg

What it is:

Studio Casts are built and finished here in our studio, then delivered and installed in your home or business.

Benefits:

We can create more detailed cast shapes such as cast sinks and inlaid features.  We have more control of the polishing and finishing with glass and specialty aggregates. We can also service a wider area, including the delivery and installation of jobs up to 2 hours away from our New England Studio.

How it works:

The first step in the studio cast is a site visit to take the measurements for what is to be built.  We would schedule a time to come by and take a template of the area, or if the piece is free standing, we would discuss what is to be built through drawings.  Once the design has been approved, we would build the forms and cast the piece right in our studio. All of the mess of the production, the pouring, the grinding, the polishing and sealing process happens in our home, not yours!  Once your job is done, which is typically about 4 weeks, we will contact you to schedule a time to deliver and install the concrete. We can deliver personally to all sites within 2 hours of Providence, RI, including the Cape and Islands. For projects outside of our local area, we can crate and ship the items via common carrier and offer consultation services to licensed contractors

On-Site Casting

What it is:

In this fabrication method, our crew would come right out to your jobsite and build the molds right on site.

Benefits:

The main benefit of this method of fabrication is that pieces can be cast seamlessly, in one continuous cast. This could be something of complexity that requires more structure, such as a wall or the base to a bar that would need to be tied into the existing floor or slab.   This could also be a bar top or kitchen that would just too large to safely deliver and install.

How it works:

The first step in a site cast build is the initial analysis and consultation.  We would go over the expectations, temperature and environmental necessities, the logistics and any extra structural elements that may be required before we begin. Because of the demands of the crew to work on site, we typically keep smaller site cast opportunities closer to home within a 1 hour radius from the Providence, RI area.  Larger projects can absorb some of the travel costs and can extend our work radius. Once the job is scheduled, the team would come out to the site and build and cast right there. Most mold builds and casts take place over the course of a week. Subsequent visits would be needed in the following weeks to complete the finishing and sealing.

The Final Touches

As we wrap up your project we will communicate with our outside fabricators and schedule whatever additional installation time would be needed.  Upon our final walkthrough of your project, you will receive instructions on the correct way to care for your concrete. It is a durable material and will last a lifetime, but proper care and upkeep will keep it beautiful longer.   Expect your concrete to change a bit over time.  We offer delivery and installation services in to all sites within 2 hours of Providence, RI, including the Cape and Islands.
